FUNK FRIDAY
How Funk Friday Came to Life
Funk Friday was born from a spark of inspiration in 2022, when Grand Rapids drummer and bandleader Da’Veonce (Da’Veonce Washington) traveled to Minneapolis. While exploring the city, he stepped into the legendary venue Bunkers, where the House Band was tearing the stage apart with pure old-school funk. The group featured none other than Sonny T—Prince’s iconic bassist—laying down heavy grooves while the band played a wide range of classic covers.
That night left a permanent mark. Da’Veonce realized that Grand Rapids didn’t have anything quite like that—nothing consistent, nothing truly funky, nothing that brought the community together month after month. Inspired by what he experienced in Minneapolis, he set out to build something similar back home: a place where musicians could shine, friends could gather, and the city could feel the groove.
Turnstiles in Grand Rapids believed in the vision and gave Dave a shot to host what would become Funk Friday. The residency launched in 2023 and ran strong all the way through 2025, taking over every second Friday of the month. What started as an idea quickly grew into a community tradition—an anchor of live funk, soul, hip-hop, and good energy in the heart of the city.
Funk Friday became more than a show. It became a home for the groove.
We love performing the top throwbacks, new 100 Billboard tunes, and our originals. We call them original covers!
